OC Watersheds is a division within the OC Public Works Department. We serve the residents, businesses, and visitors throughout Orange County.
OC Watersheds comprises the following sections essential for our common goal…to protect our watersheds and coastal resources:
Environmental Monitoring : collects, manages, analyzes and assesses environmental data to support regional water quality compliance efforts and special studies (see Data Portal for access to data); maintains a network of rainfall and water level sensors that provide advance flood warning to Orange County.
Water Quality Compliance : directs and develops the TMDL programs in Orange County; coordinates NPDES compliance efforts for all County agencies; implements the NPDES OC Stormwater program as Principal Permittee
Watershed Management : manages three Watershed Management Areas and capital improvement projects
OC Watersheds Goals:
Implement the NPDES Countywide Stormwater Quality Program
Implement the County's Watershed Management Area using the regional approach of watersheds as a method for implementing water management strategies
Maintain and operate the countywide hydrologic and meteorological data collection system
Coordinate regional compliance with the federal Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) allocations established for impaired water bodies under the Clean Water Act
Coordinate compliance by County departments with federal and state regulations pertaining to surface water, domestic water, groundwater, hazardous wastes, and hazardous materials, including special studies

OC Watersheds Internships:
OC Watersheds offers a number of unpaid intern positions for college students and graduates seeking experience in the workplace. Internships are environmental / scientific in nature and involve a minimum commitment of 2 full days per week for a period of 3 months. Internships are generally offered in the Fall (September to December), Winter (January to April) and Summer (May to September).
